I know the frontline sms software is free. But many people I have talked to about it want to know if the software has the capability of allowing one send free sms. This is a question I had asked Ken before, and I dont know if things have changed given the growing attention that this very noble venture is receiving.
Right now we're not able to offer free SMS for a number of reasons. The main one is that there are users literally all over the world using hundreds of different network operators through local SIM cards. It would be impossible for us to negotiate special prices (let alone free!) with all of them.
We will start working on an online messaging service sometime in the new year which will bring the potential for cheaper, donated (or possibly even free!) messages, but users will have to connect with this service through the internet, and that will be a challenge for many.
We're always thinking about this, and will crack it one day! Watch this space. =)
hi again Ken,
thanks for your response..be sure that when that day for free sms finally comes , we shall All have additional cause to celebrate and serve our communities even better.

is it possible to modify frontline so that it can connect to a specific network and in that way users can negotiate prices with network providers in their vicinity?
FrontlineSMS does already connect with a specific network, determined by the SIM card you insert in the mobile phone or modem you use. You could always try and negotiate special messages costs, of free message bundles, with the operator based on the mobile number you're using with that SIM.
Other than that there's no other way of connecting with your operator at the moment. Building in functionality so that you could somehow connect directly with their message centre is probably some time off, I'm afraid, but something worth thinking about.
