FrontlineSMS

FrontlineSMS allows you to text message with large groups of people anywhere there is a mobile signal.

Changing the caller ID, or from number, of text messages

Hey all,

We're using a short code to receive SMSs, but the GSM operator we're working with said we need to set our GSM device to send our short code, not it's real number, as the called ID number. I know on some phones you can do this, but we're using a GSM modem. Has anyone ran into this problem before and how did they solve it? Can Frontline change the number sent with an SMS as the "from" number? Should we ditch the modem and find a Nokia phone that'll let us change the number and work with FLSMS?

thanks a lot,

John in Liberia.

Hi John,

unfortunately, FrontlineSMS is not (yet) configured to change the SIM card caller's ID.
Is there a way to ask your carrier to do it for you? Otherwise, if you find a phone which can do it, I'd suggest you try it with FrontlineSMS indeed. It should work!

Best,
Morgan
Hi John,

Sounds like it would be really neat for you to get this set up. I've not seen this feature working first hand though; do you know of any phones/modems that you can do this on?

From my understanding of the SMS specification, the sender details are actually embedded at the network level, so I'd be surprised if this will work with a phone or modem. Clickatell and IntelliSMS do support this feature, but it may not work for shortcodes as they are country-specific.

Let us know how you get on, and if there is any way we can help.

Alex
