FrontlineSMS

FrontlineSMS allows you to text message with large groups of people anywhere there is a mobile signal.

Not able to set up Frontline SMS with Sony Ericsson K790i phone.

We have been working on mapping water crisis in India using ushahidi. As a part of it, we have installed FrontlineSMS for the SMS based inputs. Now, when we try to connect the phone (Sony Ericsson K790i) with the software, it does not get detected automatically. On "Manual Connect' mode, it is not able to find the port (we checked for the port number from device manager settings and entered it in the window). We are using Windows Vista  Premium OS on our laptop.

So, we would like to know if anyone has tried using this model (Sony Ericsson K790i) for FrontlineSMS. Is it a known problem with this model of the phone? This model is not listed with the FrontlineSMS list of phones.

Thanks!

Hi Sachin

If the K790i isn't listed on the FrontlineSMS website then it means we've not managed to get hold of one to test, and no user has reported these phones as working. It's worth noting that we recommend using GSM modems wherever possible - a few are listed on the website - which are far better suited for use with FrontlineSMS. Phones are really a second-best option, and are not ideal for essential or critical projects, which it sounds like yours is.

If a user has tried the K790i and got it working then hopefully they'll be in touch. In the meantime, you may want to try installing the software which came with the phone's cable and checking if the phone is recognised by your computer, and if you can send or receive a message. If this does work then try starting up FrontlineSMS and seeing if it can also send/receive.

Let us know if this helps in any way.

Thanks.

Ken
Hi Ken,

Thank you for a prompt reply! We were trying to figure out if we could get a phone working with this as it was more readily available than a GSM modem. The phone gets recognized by the computer when connected via PC suite (software that comes with the phone), but doesn't get recognized by FrontlineSMS.

Elsewhere on the discussion board, I have noticed a similar problem with T700 phone of Sony Ericsson. I think we would use a GSM modem now instead of trying the phones, as you suggested since this indeed is a critical project for us.

So, we'd get on with the other option of using a GSM modem, and keep the community here updated on it.

Thanks a lot!

Sachin.
Thanks, Sachin

I think this route will save you a lot of trouble, and be much more reliable.

Let us know if you have any questions!

Ken
Sure I would...
Thanks again!

Sachin
