Using Dropbox to share FLSMS database across installation on multiple machines

A quick question (to which I couldnt seem to find an answer by searching the forums - apologies if I missed an answer somewhere):

Is it possible share a FLSMS database between installations on more than 1 computer via dropbox?  Only one machine would be accessing the FLSMS/database at a given point in time.

If anybody had any success (or difficulties) with this, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks,

Ananda

Hi Ananda

There was a recent post here which has some information which might be of help:

As you can see, you can point FrontlineSMS installations to different database locations, but you'd have to check whether this would work over the web. Give it a go, and let us know!

Ken

Thanks Ken. I will - but after backing up my main database though! ;-) Ananda

Hi Ananda,  I have just written up how I managed to get two instances running, there maybe some thing in here you can use. Look at the db.path statements I refer to, maybe you can use this? perhaps it'll give you some clues. The link is a bit different to Ken's, Ken is pointing at my request for help (which is good) but since then I have posted a mini-tut how I did it.

Be aware there has been some recent issues regarding DropBox security.

Thank you Len.

This is very clear - and the db.path statements are very helpful. I'll have a go at installing one instance on two PCs via Dropbox and post on the outcome. The recent dropbox security issues are also noted, thanks.

Ananda

Ananda you are doing the opposite to me then, I created two instances on one PC, you are running one instance on two PCs.

Let us know how you get on. Good Luck.

Ananda I'm off to work now but a quick thought before I go, try mapping a drive letter to your dropbox account (I have never used dropbox so I can't help out here) then point the .db to the drive mapping, this might be easier.

Hello Ananda:

I´m a great fan of dropbox Although I´m not sure if that configuration would work

You can install the DB in a dropbox folder but there would be a delay between the upload to the "cloud" and the subsiquent download to the shared computer.

I´m sure the techies here can shed some more light but if FLSMS needs to access the DB and its uploading I guess that would cause errors.

Hope that helps

Domingo
