Hello. Hope this is the right place to post. Purple Field are developing a second film project in Malawi. Malawians love film! Our recent young people's drama (in Chichewa) is proving really successful in getting communities discussing aids and social conventions in a new way. Working with NGO's we're approaching Agriculture in 2012. This could involve characters using SMS etc and I'd be very interested in hearing thoughts, stories etc about this in Malawi. Mawa Langa -

Hi Richard
Im interested in finding out more about your mobile strategies to build rural reporting networks particularly in Ghana. I am at the start of a project to train journalists in Ghana and Uganda in extractives issues and want to connect them to communites affected by extraction. Most journalists are capital based and rarely leave the confines of the newsroom so establishing some convenient and mutually beneficial links between communities and journalists would be a huge help. Keep posting developments thanks.

Thank You, Justin, as our radio covers all domains, we will join other groups and be happy for the exchange. Your idea is good, the cell phone companies need good PR write-offs, we will watch for opportunities to discuss it. We share in planning for Tourism and REDD... Richard

Hi Richard. I'm also about to start work on mobile strategies to build citizen / rural reporting networks with radio & print partners in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Tanzania & Malawi.

Many of the same mobile operators you mention are stakeholders in these markets.

I'd be very keen to exchange ideas & experiences, as well as strategies.

In fact, if there are synergies between our projects, we might want to consider creating scales of economy by collectively negotiating with the mobile operators on behalf of our partners. A larger group would probably be able to make a more compelling argument ...

The Politics of poor leadership and Poverty: Political Targeting and Poverty Alleviation in Zambia

By Oliver Mupila
Creator International Think Tanks without Borders

Many poverty alleviation programs fail due to political interference. Politicians frequently undermine development efforts when they target benefits using political criteria. To improve poverty outcomes, we must understand the logic of such politicized targeting. Studies typically assume that politicians engage in "vote buying," bribing the poor to switch their vote choices. My research challenges this assumption by drawing attention to strategies overlooked in earlier elections and those to come in 2011. For example, politicians often engage in "turnout buying," rewarding supporters for showing up at the polls. Econometric analyses of survey data from the 2008 Presidential By-election provide evidence of turnout buying. I have developed a paper to analyze why the prevalence of such kind of politics can take place; the Zambian government does to not went you to know what they are doing. Finally, I consider the important strategic role that citizens play in exchange relationships. Based on the 2008 Presidential By-election in Zambia, my research suggests that the poor often engage in "declared choice," signaling their votes to politicians in order to obtain benefits. Such findings have important implications for ways in which Think –Tank Practitioners can reduce political interference in development projects in our country Zambia. Where is Zambia going to? You can find out by reading my finding

Implementing Frontline SMS and radio in rural Zambia and Malawi with three local stations in each country. Developing Radio Partners just launched this year long project in September. We're focused primarily on environment, natural resources and farming.
