Can FrontlineSMS work with non-GSM phones?

I know GSM is a worldwide standard and it's most likely that users will have GSM phones. But what if aid workers bring in their own phones that are NOT GSM?  Does FrontlineSMS *require* GSM on the…Continue

Quick question about FrontlineForms

I know that if a user fills out a form in an area where there is no mobile signal, the form is held in queue until a mobile signal is detected and then the data is sent. But how many forms can be…Continue

I became interested in FLSMS after hearing about it on Twitter and getting involved with a small, local community group wanting to use SMS to reach women and children trapped in domestic violence situations.

I'm a 34 year old entrepreneur and new social activist. I own a small open source electronic medical records company focused on providing high quality software to the small to mid-sized medical community in the United States and, especially, abroad.

I'm also heavily involved with assisting project, organizations, and individuals in deploying services around FrontlineSMS and have worked with a variety of people around the world and about 15 different projects all based on SMS and FrontlineSMS.

I live in a small town in Oklahoma with my two dogs, a bird, and a Betta fish with a huge attitude that I'm convinced will one day break free of his tank and launch an evil plan to attain world dominance.

17, September, 2010: Building a FrontlineSMS Based Domestic Violence Reporting System Presentation

Hello Everyone,

Didn't want to clutter up the forums with this but wanted to let you all know I'll be presenting a short online talk called "Building a FrontlineSMS Based Domestic Violence Reporting System" on 17, September, 2010 at 16:00 ET online.

Update on a public release of the FamilyFIRST domestic violence sytem

About a year ago, I developed a system around FrontlineSMS called FamilyFIRST. FamilyFIRST was developed to allow domestic violence agencies to provide better services to victims by allowing them to report incidents silently via a simple SMS message. It also allowed victims in crisis to immediately summon the police or make contact with a crisis intervention worker without the need to actually make a phone call.

Since the implementation of the system, I've gotten a lot of…

Can text messaging change the world?

As technology evolves, it can often seem like the digital divide is growing larger. As estimated 51% of American households have a PC while in some poorer or developing nations that statistic drops to sometimes lower than 2%. With such a chasm between us, one might be tempted to think that the developing world has been all but left out of the digital age, but a visit to most of those places would revel something that has leveled the playing field and, some would argue, even saved lives:… Continue

Update on using FrontlineSMS to help victims of domestic violence

In late May of this year, I assisted a local crisis center in deploying a solution we've now dubbed "FamilyFIRST". FamilyFIRST is an SMS based system that allows victims of domestic violence to reach out to police, crisis counselors, and to document abuse incidents all via simple SMS messaging.

When the project first began, neither I nor the agency involved were sure how it would be received or if it would even be used. Educating victims to think proactively in crisis situation is a… Continue

How FrontlineSMS will help domestic violence victims in the USA.

I only recently became involved with FrontlineSMS as an addition to a national project my company, OpenEMR HQ, is doing with a small African country. But, since discovering the software, I've been busily thinking of good ways it could be put to use by organizations in my own community and I've come up with a few I believe are viable. Today, I want to share one of those ideas and how we're going to use FrontlineSMS as a tool to help combat violence against… Continue

Anthony, having read your fascinating case study...was wondering if you had any recommendations for FLSMS usable/recommendable mobile devices in the USA. I have been following a great deal of the FLSMS online community correspondence and am trying to sift through to find solid recommendations for equipment that will work to get a FLSMS portal up and running here in DC. Do you know anybody implementing FLSMS in the DC Area?
Thanks,
Eric
