We have been careful to close the driver software and have restarted the laptop a couple of times also. Will we be asked for a PIN number if the sim has one ? We have not set one up, but it might have a defualt one…"

Are you running the mobile partner software together with the frontlinesms software? You need to close the mobile partner software then run frontlinesms.
The modem should connect automatically if a pin is not set on the SIM card.
