Innovation Program Officer for Winrock International, 35 years experience in international development, mostly rural development focus and especially interested in impacts made possible by technology interacting with societies in conflict or post-conflict.
I have a question on solar / wireless internet (i.e. contacts), and remember listening to you doing periodic VOA broadcasts in one of your "former lives". I am looking for info on rural internet connectivity options, and VITA's website on my first couple of passes wasn't "fruitful". The idea of using SMS is an interesting option as well.
"Text messaging (SMS) has become a way of life for many of us over the past few years, but for farmers and agriculture producers in El Salvador, its opening up a new world of business opportunities, as mobile phones are in heavy use in even the most rural areas. Supported by a Winrock internal grant to the Foundation for Innovative Agricultural Technology (FIAGRO) through the USAID-funded John Ogonowski Farmer-to-Farmer Program, the Market Information for Improved Rural Livelihoods project is designed to allow producers and buyers to post buy/sell offers via SMS messages that are either sent directly to mobile phones or call center operators who log the information for illiterate or semi-illiterate farmers. The operators create summaries of offers to send via text message and e-mail, and communities with Internet access will also be able to view them on Web sites and with RSS feeds. The system is built on free FrontlineSMS software and other adaptations. Project coordinator Gary Garriott says he hopes that within a few short months, more than 600 smallholder farmers will be using the systems."
