We're specifically interested in mobile projects, ranging from data-driven stuff, to text-based.Successful applicants will get cash + engineering support + business mentorship + tickets to world media…See More

I am very keen to explore practical ways to deploy FrontlineSMS in the newsrooms of partner media I work with across Africa.

I am especially interested in breaking through the marketing hype surrounding mobile media, and to pilot ways for tools such as FrontlineSMS to be used as an integral part of day-to-day news production.

This means finding ways to use SMS, MMS, audio, camera-phones, and geo-mobile to both report (journalists as the users) and tell (readers as the users) news stories.

And, finally, no innovation will be embraced by struggling media organisations if we cannot show in practical terms how it will either improve cost efficiencies or boost revenues. I am therefore also extremely interested in business models for mobile media.
Tell us about you. (Please also add an image to your profile)
I am a veteran journalist, publisher, and rural media entrepreneur.

I started my career as an anti-corruption journalist, founding and managing an award-winning rural-based investigative news agency. I also founded and ran a rural glossy magazine publishing company, and more recently helped establish a rural commercial radio station.

In addition, I co-founded Africa's largest investigative reporting association, as well as South Africa's largest association of independent publishers, plus the region's only freelance journalist association, and South Africa's new journalist union.

I am a councillor on the South African Press Council, and serve on a number of media industry boards. I also consult for a number of media development agencies across Africa.

I have spent the past year as a Knight Fellow at Stanford University, in the USA's Silicon Valley, exploring ways to leverage the mobile web for African media.
