"Hi Sarah,  Thanks for your reply.  We've met with the phone companies and will continue having meetings over the next couple months--hopefully we'll be able to work something out.  The potential problem is that the CSR…"

Funding an SMS project--Telefónica, América Móvil, other phone companies? Grants?

Our project ChatSalud is almost ready to go.  Our last missing piece is figuring out how to fund the ever-changing monthly and yearly costs of SMS. There are two telephone companies in Nicaragua: Telefónica and  América Móvil.  Has anyone had experience working with Corporate Social Responsibility in one of these two corporations? On what sort of…See More

"Noted, we'll keep working on our project design to see if we can get a way through it. As long as we have the auto join/leave functions I think we ought to be in the clear. Thanks! -Nishant"

"Great! We'll bear that in mind. Just one thing - not sure sub-groups will be in it. We will keep you posted but I think it likely that will make it into the January/February release. Best wishes Laura"

Cutting through Red Tape Little by Little.

We finally heard back from CONISIDA, the Nicaraguan Commission on Aids run by the Ministry of Health, whom we presented our project to about a month ago and whom we need permission from to run ChatSalud. They sent us a series of edits--nothing major--which our team is working on this week. With any luck, we'll be moving forward shortly.I'd be interested to hear from…See More

ChatSalud: A Nicaraguan Revolution of a Different Kind

According to the International Telecommunication Union, approximately 8 out of 10 Nicaraguans have cell phones (ITU 2011).  And according to the Nicaraguan Dispatch, all 153 municipalities have cell phone coverage (17 Sept. 2012).  This means that if you live in a city or out in the most rural of…See More

As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nicaragua, I am working on Project ChatSalud,an SMS-based sexual and reproductive health hotline in coordination with the Nicaraguan Red Cross and other local partners. The goal of the project is to eliminate barriers to accessing health information due to "pena," or a cultural hesitancy of talking about sex, by providing a completely anonymous means of access. We are using FrontlineSMS to run the hotline, collect data, and to automate the hotline as much as possible.
Tell us about you. (Please also add an image to your profile)
I am a current Peace Corps Volunteer in Nicaragua ('11-'13) working on the maternal and child health promotion project. I have a BS in Community Health from the University of Maryland in College Park, MD.
