Well, I heard about FrontlineSMS from the Times newspaper in Johannesburg, an article by Toby Shapshak in which he explains the origin of the package (Ken Banks visiting the Kruger Park) and its purpose which is to allow NGOs to communicate more effectively via SMS. The reason I am interested is that I am involved in an non-profit NGO which does community development work in Yeoville Bellevue, Johannesburg, South Africa and I SMS a lot to people in the community to raise issues, to give information about meetings etc. Anything which will make this more efficient and effective will be very welcome.

I am a long-time resident of Yeoville Bellevue which has seen much change since the advent of democracy in South Africa. Not only has it become a majority black area, it is also home to many migrants from the rest of Africa. There are many socio-economic challenges in the area, most of which are a direct consequence of the lack of effective urban management and communication by local government. What I am working on is a holistic development strategy for the area which will contribute to making Yeoville Bellevue a safe, clean, caring, law-abiding and prosperous area while celebrating the international and cultural diversity of the place.
