I have been looking for a method to send in field observations via a mobile phone. Data collection via SMS messages had appealed to me but other systems I had investigated via telephone carriers had all been expensive & complex. Also the VBOP project to monitor beach erosion at Venus Bay is voluntary and so I wanted it to be both inexpensive and simple to participate.

I heard about frontline SMS from Digital Planet a BBC podcast.

I am a consulting geologist, also an artist & photographer. I have a place at Venus Bay in Victoria. It has a wonderful sweeping wide sand beach, but has suffered considerable erosion over the past few years. I am interested to record many peoples observations and build a map and collect photos of the erosion and how it progresses. This could provide assistance in understanding the effects of future sea level rise. Already I have observed that the brun rule, quoted extensively in the IPPC studies to describe and estimate inundation & erosion does not adequately explain what we have been observing.

Otherwise I’m pretty harmless :)
