MCHIP/Ghana mMentoring Intervention Design

Theory: Given competency (training), Retention + Confidence  Performance
Hypothesis: Mobile mentoring will support retention (of competencies in BEmONC) and boost confidence (in performing BEmONC functions & teaching BEmONC) leading to improved performance (teaching BEmONC)
Acknowledgement: We won’t be considering other impediments to performance, e.g., supplies, time, salary, etc.

Target areas:
1. AMTSL
2. Newborn Resuscitation
3. Manual Removal of the Placenta
4. PE/E

SMS
For each target area there will be 10 text messages—5 reinforcement statements and 5 quiz questions—delivered on workdays for a total of two work weeks of messages. Each set of 10 questions will be repeated once immediately following the first set resulting in 4 full weeks of text messages per target area. In total, 40 messages will be developed. The delivery and receipt of text messages will be logged by the text messaging software (e.g., FrontlineSMS).

Voice
There will be 2 1-on-1 structured case study phone calls for each target area. 1-on-1 phone calls will be conducted for the first 4 days of the second and fourth weeks of text message delivery. Each day mentors will call two tutors/preceptors. Each mentor will determine which two tutors/preceptors they will call on what weekdays and maintain the same call schedule (which two tutors on what weekday) throughout the intervention. In total, 8 case studies will be developed. Consultation phone calls initiated by the tutors/preceptors, potentially by flashing/beeping their mentor, will be ad-hoc, as needed and not scheduled in advance. All phone calls—both 1-on-1’s and consultations—will be tracked using a Mentor’s call log (e.g., Excel spreadsheet
