"@Mathias: The pieces are coming togather thanks to your info. I may pursue the keyword option. Looks like it would be helpful to limit the clicks for those in the field trying to collect and submit data quickly and effectively."
"Thanks for that information. I will definitely checkout stockout.org as I anticipate to collect a bunch of data too. Best of luck with the data collection. I will keep you posted.
I just replied to your reply in the forum.
I am based in China, I haven't implemented FSMS myself yet (I just have the system installed locally). I'm currently focussing on an Android port of the desktop application, which…"

I'm in the planning stage and trying to figure out the best way to handle the data once I collect it. It would reside on a local pc on Excel or Access. How can I provide visibility to the data for different team members? Ruth"
It's nice to meet someone who's actually using it in Kenya. I live in the US with my family. This is still experimental for me. I'm working on a study to increase vaccine uptake and the tools offered by FLSMS seem…"

I'm really interested in improving public health in resoure-limited regions such as Africa through the use of affordable technologies. Text messaging really struck me as a useful tool considering that a large section of the population now has cell phones. I'm exploring if and how text messaging can be used to send reminders, track uptake, and keep an electronic medical record.
Tell us about you. (Please also add an image to your profile)
I'm originally from Kenya but residing in the USA since 1998. I've started out teaching in Kenya then transitioned to compliance within Health-IT and have been working as a compliance analyst since 2007. I have been involved in organizing at least 2 free medical camps in Kenya and was really moved by the need for improved health infrastructure. This experience has really motivated me to pursue public health issues in Kenya more vigorously. I will be starting my PhD in Public Health in Fall 2011.

As for FLSMS in Kenya - I haven't used it yet. The input data has taken 4 months to get started :( and I might use clickatell if FLSMS (the cheaper option) doesn't work. I like Clickatell's ability to accept a bunch of pre-written and pre-addressed messages as a single CSV file.
