There's a collaborative project with Nokia Research and Deep Springs International to improve effectiveness in household water quality interventions in Haiti.

We're trying out mobile phones and near field communication (RFID) as data collection infrastructure for community health workers.

I'm a PhD student in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences at UC Berkeley, doing research with Dr. Edmund Seto on low-cost sensing, mobile applications, pollution modeling, and the built environment.

My technical background is design and engineering-related, with a specialization in Human-Computer Interaction.

I'm interested in participatory approaches to environmental health.

Anyone have recommendations for a tried-and-tested (yet still commercially available!) GSM modem that'll work in both Haiti (deployment site) and the United States (demo & development site)?
