Khmer language support: Translation ongoing...

Hi all,

This is Vantharith from Cambodia.
I am a Cambodian, living in the capital of Phnom Penh.

I, by chance, happened to know about FrontlineSMS when I was reading some blogs of Singaporean BarCampers. I was then re-directed to FrontlineSMS website.
After reading and learning more about FrontlineSMS, I also read further on other projects of Kiwanja.net.
I'm so impressed by all the projects and would like to see future/possible adaptation or application in Cambodia.

So, I then requested Ken for a download permission of FrontlineSMS. My plan is to localize it and create a Khmer language support for FrontlineSMS. Currently 70% of all the texts are translated. But before submitting to Ken, I would like to have it reviewed by some locals first.

I believe FrontlineSMS is very useful and can be applied in many sectors in Cambodia. And as a Cambodian, please count me in if you have any relevant projects in Cambodia!

By the way, I also told InSTEDD about some of the work being done with FrontlineSMS in Cambodia. They've just opened a Lab there. Hopefully one of them will get in touch.

Great to hear about the translation! We're releasing a new FrontlineSMS in a few weeks or so, and will be able to test it and include it then.

The handset support is being widened, but we won't be able to do much for the next few weeks. Remember that other phones not on the list *will* work, it's just that we've not been able to test every single phone on the market (which would be impossible). If you have access to phones and can somehow try them out first, then that might be a solution. Else, if you have a small budget we recommend a GSM modem (a few are listed on the website).

Hi Ken,

My Khmer translation is almost done...
Sorry, it took me a bit longer time for this as I was somehow sick and couldn't spend enough time on it.
Anyway, by next Monday, I will send you the Khmer translation. So, you can include it in the next release. Bravo, FrontlineSMS!!!

By the way, is there any good news on the updated list of supported phones?
I really have hard time in finding old support phones in Cambodia as they are no longer available. Hope to hear good news from you on this.

Great to see that you've just reached out to Rob, who's doing some very interesting agriculture-based work in Cambodia.
