FrontlineSMS

FrontlineSMS allows you to text message with large groups of people anywhere there is a mobile signal.

Hi FrontlineSMS Community!

FrontlineSMS now supports Hindi, but when you use the Hindi that is installed on your computer (Computer Panel > Regional and Language Options > Hindi), you need to learn a whole new keyboard map to type. You can find the map just by doing a google search, and it looks something like: http://tinyurl.com/hindi-keyboard-map

For example, to write "pooja" in Hindi, you would have to press the keys "h-t-p-e."

Learning this whole new set of keys is probably difficult if you are not already familiar with it.

But I found a desktop download that let's you type in Hindi phonetically. (As in to write "pooja" in Hindi you actually type those letters!) I've only been able to find the Windows version, but you can download it at: http://tdil.mit.gov.in/download/hwiter.htm. It is very intuitive!

I've tried typing in another Indian dialect (Marathi) and it worked, just not as easily as with Hindi.

This phonetic way will be helpful to FrontlineSMS users in India if they are already familiar with English.

Good Luck and feel free to give feedback!

Best,

Pooja

We are exploring using FrontlineSMS in Chhattisgarh in a Central tribal region of India. So Hindi support would be great. Our fellow on the ground is having some difficulties shifting the language of the discussion to the local Hindi language. Pooja, I would have our fellow to contact you.

So I will be very keen to understand the technical possibilities on linking people with mobile to our site for a two way communication

We would like to send some info to people who have mobile phone and vice versa, will also like to receive information from mobile phone which can go to the website and discussion forum

Best,

Luis Botello
