Chilmari, Kurigram: Speakers at a transmission launching ceremony yesterday 2nd june, 2012 said Community Radio would become voice of the marginalized people in remote areas to awaken them ensuring their overall empowerment and development.
They said Community Radio would build healthier culture, knowledge-based society and disseminate need- based information timely to the local communities to help enhancing rural development and changing their lifestyle. Community Radio would ensure e- governance in building a medium income Digital Bangladesh by informing people about agriculture, health, trade, gender, education, weather, natural calamities, poverty and socio- cultural issues, they said. They were addressing transmission launching ceremony of Radio Chilmari, only Community Radio station in Rangpur division, with FM 99.2 Megahertz frequency at its office in Chilmari upazila town of Kurigram. Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Narayan Chandra Barma attended the ceremony as the chief guest with Executive Director of RDRS Bangladesh Dr Selima Rahman in the chair. Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram Habibur Rahman, Regional Director of Rangpur Betar Kendra Sayeed Mostafa Kamal and ASP (Circle-B) of Kurigram Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan were present as the special guests.
Chilmari UNO Mamun-Ul-Hassan, Director (Programme Coordination) of RDRS Bangladesh Azizul Karim, its Programme Coordinator Shariful Islam Khan and Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication AHM Bazlur Rahman spoke. Government and NGO officials, experts, public representatives, professionals, media workers, government service providers, socio-cultural activists, officials and technicians of Radio Chilmari and elites were present. With this formal inauguration, Radio Chilmari, a private sector Community Radio centre started its regular transmission from 6 pm to 7 pm daily for the people living within 17-km radius all- around in the remote and disaster-prone char areas.
The speakers said Community Radio would empower the marginalized and backward people including women, root out social curses, reduce disaster risks and ensure accountability and transparency in the government's development activities. In his speech, the chief guest said Community Radio would play important roles in disseminating information quickly in the remote, hardly reachable and disaster-prone areas to benefit the people enormously. He suggested authorities of Radio Chilmari for preparing need- based programmes involving local people in line with their hopes and aspirations to assist them in becoming educated, aware and achieving socio-cultural and economic developments .
