Reconnect small cashew producers to cope with international market

Cote d'Ivoire is the second largest exporter of raw cashews that generates incomes for approximately 250,000 producers.

The project set up by RONGEAD enables more than 8000 producers and 250 peasant leaders have information, tools, knowledge and skills to enhance and secure their revenue source. The project "Creation of a proactive network of shared knowledge of the world market for cashew value chain in Cote d'Ivoire" (EU funded) has provided five training modules on the international market.

The training modules address particular description of the industry (actors, relationships, margins ...), an explanation for the formation and evolution of the price (producing countries, changes in supply and demand, ...) and decision personal decision (when to sell, when storing, sell in group...).

And a dozen educational materials (see photos) have been developed in the project. The 250 peasant leaders then realize field training to the 8000 producers (including a role play!).

At the level of information dissemination, each week, a market analysis is performed by two specialists in the sector in Côte d'Ivoire and France each week summaries are released as an electronic newsletter of messages by local radio and through 3000 SMS, differentiated by region, sent each week by FrontlineSMS.

The project caused a great excitement, the producers appear to have access to information and training. Plus it helps create relationships of solidarity between local producers and sell to discuss together, relationships which have been diminished following the stigma affecting certain cooperatives, but also the climate of suspicion of this sector opaque and unstructured.

In contrast to a SIM, we are convinced that the objective should not be simply to disseminate collected prices but add elements of market understanding and that it is necessary to assist producers receiving the information to promote their own decision making and avoid misunderstandings counter-productive.
